DAN STEC

Senator, 45th District

Senator Dan Stec began serving the constituents of the 45th Senate District in 2021. Before that, he served as the Assemblyman in the 114th Assembly District since 2013. His district includes all of Clinton, Essex, Franklin, and Warren Counties, and parts of St. Lawrence County and Washington County.

Stec looks forward to helping solve the critical issues New York State faces – taxes, job growth, education reform and corruption. He will strive to spread a message of fiscal conservatism, beginning with unfunded mandate relief and lower property taxes. Stec has been the Assembly’s most outspoken member fighting for pension forfeiture for corrupt legislators and sponsors several bills that would accomplish that goal.

Stec is a lifetime member of the NRA and staunch Second Amendment supporter as well as a proud Adirondack 46er. During his time in the Assembly, he has opposed the NY-SAFE Act and voted against the legislation. He currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the Minority Program Committee, Ranking Minority Member of the Assembly’s Committee on Environmental Conservation and sits on the Consumer Affairs, Local Governments, Social Services, and Tourism committees.

Stec also has delivered a total school aid funding increase during each of his three budget cycles in the Assembly and worked tirelessly to restore the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) cuts made to our schools in 2010.

A dedicated public servant, Stec brings valuable local government experience to the State Assembly. He got his start in Queensbury Town government – first on the zoning board and then for two terms as a town councilman. He served as Queensbury Town Supervisor for nine years and, more recently, served two years as Chairman of the Warren County Board of Supervisors. As Queensbury Town Supervisor, Stec returned almost $10 million to local taxpayers in the form of rebates.

Stec worked his way through Clarkson University while studying to earn his BS in Chemical Engineering, including one summer in Essex County at the International Paper Company in Ticonderoga. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Navy nuclear power program, serving for eight years as a nuclear engineer onboard the USS Truxtun, and was stationed in the Persian Gulf during operation Desert Storm. While serving in the Navy, he earned an MBA from the University of Rhode Island. Stec has been married to his college sweetheart, Hilary, since 1991. They have one son, Peter.
