ALBANY — NYGOP Chair Ed Cox released the following statement:

“Congressman Morelle says he is ‘defending democracy’ when he meets with legislative Democrats today – in reality, he is undermining it. New York is one of the few states in the nation with a ban on partisan redistricting in the State Constitution – passed by referendum in 2014 and affirmed by voters in 2021.

“Today, Morelle is in Albany under orders from Hakeem Jeffries to subvert the will of the voters by overturning that very referendum. That’s not ‘defending democracy’ – that’s an attack on democracy.

“It’s no surprise that Jeffries enlisted Morelle to do his dirty work: Morelle served in the State Assembly as Majority Leader under the corrupt Speaker Sheldon Silver. He never once objected to Silver’s corrupt or illegal activities. Now, Morelle returns to Albany to do the bidding of Jeffries as Jeffries conspires to become U.S. House Speaker by rigging New York’s elections. 

“Joe Morelle is a political hack whose loyalty lies with the interests of his party’s bosses – not the interests of his constituents in Monroe and Ontario Counties.”
