LANGWORTHY: BLAME FOR TRAVEL DOCUMENT DILEMMA RESTS SQUARELY WITH ANDREW CUOMO
Republicans Warned of Security Consequences of Democrats’ Shielding Data From Law Enforcement
New York–February 7th…New York Republican Chairman Nick Langworthy’s message to New Yorkers is that the blame for the travel document dilemma rests squarely with Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Last year, Cuomo and legislative Democrats enacted the “Green Light Law” giving driver’s licenses to people who are in the country illegally. There is a provision in the law that prohibits law enforcement from obtaining access to DMV records, which Republicans warned at the time would have serious security consequences. This week, the Department of Homeland Security announced that New York would no longer be able to participate in fast-track international travel programs because of this policy.
There are well-established security and legality concerns with providing people in the country illegally with government-issued identity documents. The 9/11 Commission warned, “for terrorists, travel documents are just as important as weapons.”
“The blame for this travel document dilemma rests squarely with Andrew Cuomo,” said NYGOP Chairman Nick Langworthy. “This is an issue of safety and security, which Democrats have zero regard for anymore. Once again, Cuomo is on the side of law-breakers over citizen taxpayers. Republicans tried to warn about the consequences of their reckless actions, but they were more interested in ramming through their extreme political agenda than caring how this would impact everyday New Yorkers.”
