Cox: Magnarelli plays cynical game with New Yorkers
Democrats still trying to rig Congressional districts

ALBANY – Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli has introduced legislation that limits the ability of New Yorkers to challenge unfair redistricting plans imposed by the State Legislature. Magnarelli’s bill, now on a fast track to passage this Monday, would limit challenges to redistricting to only four heavily Democratic jurisdictions in the state. The jurisdictions are Albany, Buffalo, Westchester and Manhattan.

NYGOP Chair Ed Cox released the following statement in response:

“Bill Magnarelli is playing a cynical Albany game befitting his career politician status in the State Assembly. Magnarelli and Democrats in the legislature were caught red-handed in 2022 violating the state constitution with their illegal gerrymander of congressional districts – but he hasn’t learned his lesson.

“Ironically, Magnarelli cuts out his own citizens in Central New York from this legislation. Citizens of Syracuse and Onondaga County won’t be able to bring a court action against an illegal gerrymander locally. They’ll have to travel to some other jurisdiction to bring a case.

“New York State and Onondaga County voters in 2014 voted to adopt strong state-level prohibitions against partisan gerrymandering. Magnarelli now figures voters in Onondaga County won’t notice his actions.

“Democrats attempted to rig congressional districts in their favor in 2022 and have spent the last year trying to get around the court decisions that mandated fair congressional districts. Magnarelli wants to help his party rig the game to cut off access to the courts.

“We will also be watching to see if Senator John Mannion votes in favor of this unfair bill.”
