Chairman Langworthy Submits FOIL on Cuomo’s License Plate Contest

NYGOP Chairman Langworthy Requests All Correspondence and Results of Cuomo’s License Plate Tax Contest

“Cuomo’s License Plate Tax Was Bad Enough; New Yorkers Have a Right to Know if Contest Was a Scam Too”

Albany, NY–September 6th…New York Republican Chairman Nick Langworthy today submitted a Freedom of Information Law request to the Governor Cuomo’s office for all documentation related to Cuomo’s license plate tax contest. Chairman Langworthy personally delivered the official request and also submitted it electronically.

Cuomo, who has come under fire for his recent announcement that motor vehicle owners would be forced to purchase new license plates, invited New Yorkers to participate in a “statewide survey” to vote on a preferred design for the new plates. Four of the designs were remarkably similar featuring the Statue of Liberty, while the fifth design was of the Cuomo Bridge, named after his late-father, leading many to speculate that it was a faux contest orchestrated in favor of his namesake bridge design.
Voting closed on Monday, but Cuomo has not yet made public the results of the vote.
“Forcing New Yorkers to pay a new license plate tax and then devising a rigged contest to get his namesake bridge design is classic Prince Andrew,” said NYGOP Chairman Nick Langworthy. “Cuomo’s new tax was bad enough but now he needs to come clean and hand over all documents and correspondence related to this so-called contest. New Yorkers have a right to full transparency.”
